Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) is a multi-discipline university that encompasses such areas as engineering, management, economics, liberal arts and science, with special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management.
The university runs 2 post-doctoral research stations (Transportation and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering), 2 primary-discipline doctoral programs (Transportation and Communication Engineering, Management Science and Engineering), 17 subordinate-discipline doctoral programs, 13 primary-discipline Master’s degree programs, 57 subordinate-discipline Master's degree programs, 5 specialized Master's degree programs, 45 Bachelor's degree programs, and 12 associate-degree programs. Currently, SMU has a full-time student population of over 20,000, of whom about 17,000 are undergraduate students and about 3000 are graduate students. Of the over 1,000 full-time teachers, 146 are professors and 50 percent of teachers hold a doctorate degree.
SMU presently consists of Merchant Marine College, College of Transport and Communications, School of Economics & Management, College of Logistics Engineering (Sino-Dutch Mechanical and Electronic Engineering College), Law School, College of Information Engineering, College of Foreign Languages, College of Ocean Science and Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, Scientific Research Academy, and etc. SMU boasts 1 state-level key discipline (Transport Planning and Management), 5 state-level specialties with special features, 9 ministerial or municipal key disciplines, and 17 Shanghai municipal “educational heights”. Moreover, SMU owns a Water Training Center, and a ten-thousand-ton training vessel, and the newly-built bulk-cargo vessel of 48 thousand ton which came into service by the end of 2012. The graduated students of SMU are employed in shipping companies, port enterprises and government institutions. Deservedly, SMU has been honored as a “cradle of international shipping specialists”.
SMU has always attached much importance to exchange and cooperation with overseas academies, institutions and industry companies, and has established close ties with over 70 institutions in aspects of teacher communication, joint school-running, scientific research cooperation, students exchange, and etc. Approved by the Education Ministry of China in 2011, the Bachelor of Science program in “Logistics Management”, offered by Shanghai Maritime University in collaboration with Regional Maritime University is open to applicants from Central and West Africa, which is the pioneering overseas program that can be awarded Chinese bachelor's degree among Shanghai universities. Since 2012, SMU is approved to accept the Chinese Government Scholarship students, which will be more conducive to promoting the process of internationalization of SMU. During academic year 2013 – 2014, there are over 650 international students studying in SMU for short-term or long-term programs.
Chinese language training remains the main part of international students’ education in SMU, and the amount of language students accounts for over 60% of that the total international students. The degree programs, especially international students’ programs in some key disciplines are distinguished in SMU. Now international students are enrolled in all levels of degree education including undergraduate, graduate, PHD, and short –term professional education. Aside from regular international education programs for undergraduate, graduate and PhD, other special programs including student exchange program, professional training program and oversea education program are also conducted in SMU.
